alternative junk removal options

one man’s junk is another man’s treasure

Helpful, Affordable Options for Hernando, Citrus, Sumter & North Pasco County

At Pick Up & Haul Away, I know that sometimes junk piles up at the worst time financially. While I’m always here to help, I also want to give my neighbors some useful ideas for getting rid of junk when hiring a junk removal company just isn’t possible.

Here are some free or low-cost ways to clear out your unwanted stuff:

  1. List Items for Free on Facebook Marketplace

A lot of items you might think are junk can actually help someone else. Posting furniture, appliances, tools, baby gear, and even building materials for free on Facebook Marketplace is one of the fastest ways to get items off your hands. People are often looking for these items and will gladly come haul them away.

2. Donate to Local Nonprofits

Several organizations in our area accept donations — and some will even come pick them up:

  • Jericho Road Ministries

They take furniture, household items, clothing, and more. In many cases, they offer free pickups for large items.

  • Other local thrift stores and churches may also take donations and offer pickup services.

Donating helps people in need and keeps usable items out of the landfill.

3. Use Curbside “Free” Signs

You’d be surprised how quickly items disappear when placed at the curb with a simple FREE sign. Even items that aren’t perfect often find a new home when left out for neighbors or passersby.

4. Bulk Pickup through your trash company

Many local waste management companies offer curbside bulk pickup for a small extra fee. This works great for items like old furniture, mattresses, appliances, and more — if you can get it to the curb.

Call your trash provider to check costs and rules. Great for larger, manageable items.

5. Scrap Metal Collectors

Got a pile of metal items? Old appliances, grills, lawn equipment, or metal furniture? There are plenty of local scrap metal collectors who will pick it up for free — especially if you’ve got a decent amount.

  • Search Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, or even Google for local scrap haulers.

  • Many will happily haul off your metal at no charge because they can recycle it for cash.

6. Community “Buy sell trade” Groups

Many neighborhoods now have Buy sell trade groups on Facebook or apps like Nextdoor. You can list items you want to give away, and folks in your own neighborhood can come pick them up.

7. Free Yard Giveaway Days

Instead of hosting a traditional yard sale, you can set out items for free and let people take what they want.

  • Post about your “Free Yard Giveaway” in local Facebook groups or community boards.

  • Anything leftover can be donated, recycled, or hauled away afterward.

8. Hernando County Free Annual Dumping

If you live in Hernando County, you’re in luck — the county allows residents to dump up to 1 ton of junk per year for free at the landfill. This is a great option if you can haul it yourself.

Important notes:

  • Only applies to Class 1 waste:

    Furniture

    Household trash

    Plain old junk

  • Does NOT apply to construction debris, remodeling waste, or demolition materials.

  • You’ll need to show proof of residency (driver’s license, utility bill, etc.)

  • Check Hernando County Solid Waste for current hours and rules.

9. Rent a Trailer or Dumpster

If you have access to a truck or can rent a small trailer, you can take loads directly to the landfill yourself. But for bigger projects, renting a dumpster can be a great way to work at your own pace.

  • My friend Brock Shade at Dump’s Junk offers dumpster rentals for folks who want to load their junk themselves. www.dumpsjunk.com

  • This is great if you have a full weekend to get things cleaned up.

10. Local Churches and Volunteer Help

Some local churches, ministries, or service groups may offer assistance for seniors, single parents, or folks going through a tough season.

  • They may have volunteers available for light hauling or helping move things to the curb.

  • Reach out to local churches or nonprofit organizations to see if any programs are available.

11. pick & pull or wrecking yards

If you have an unwanted vehicle sitting around, many scrap yards will tow it away for free, and some may even pay you a small amount for it.

  • Works for cars, trucks, trailers, campers, and other junk vehicles

  • No title? Some scrapyards may still take it depending on their rules

12. And When It’s Just Too Much — we’re the one’s you can trust!
